Quality Management

NACHC believes that Quality Management (QM) is not only the “right thing to do” for health centers and their patients, but also an important element of organizational survival – and thriving – in today’s dynamic health care environment.  Conscientiously carried out, rigorous QM serves as a cornerstone for organizational quality integration and helps enable health centers to claim their rightful place in our nation’s rapidly evolving health care system.

The NACHC quality resources listed here provide the building blocks for health centers to undertake the practical application of quality in their daily operations:

1. A Quality Primer: Free Three-Part Quality Management Webinar Series for New & Seasoned Health Center Staff

Sponsored by NACHC, the three archived Webinars in this special series on the fundamentals of Quality Management (QM) – 1. Laying the Foundation, 2. Building Organizational Quality, and 3. Pulling it all Together in Today’s Environment – are designed to ensure that new health center staff are on the same footing as their peers regarding general quality principles and basic QM techniques as they move into their new roles.  Ideally, health center interdisciplinary quality teams will listen together to all three Webinars—as a primer for new staff, a refresher for experienced staff, and a valuable team-building exercise.  (SPECIAL NOTE: Before accessing these Webinars, we strongly recommend first reading NACHC’s Quality Management Monograph entitled “The Quality Management Plan.”)

Each Webinar is about 45-60 minutes long and includes exercises to guide active group thinking; these exercises can be conducted either during or after each Webinar.  Each Webinar is accompanied by a downloadable PDF version of the PowerPoint presentation, including all speaker’s notes and relevant resources with hyperlinks.

Our primary intent in Webinar 1, Laying the Foundation, is to ensure that new health center employees have an understanding of quality–both theory and practice–on a par with their new colleagues, and to provide a useful referesher for experienced staff.

Our focus in Webinar 2, Building Organizational Quality, is on creating an effective Quality Management Plan–a required document for health centers fuded by the Bureau of Primary Health Care.  A good Quality Manangement Plan is critical to a health cener in structuring for, and routinely carrying out, ongoing quality improvement to ensure the best possible health care for our patients and communities.

This final Webinar, Pulling it all Together in Today’s Environment, addresses how your health center can create a “plug-and-play” template for measuring selected metrics based in patient-centered care.  It also delves into the related initiative driving much creative activity in health care today, the Patient Centered Medical Home (or PCMH) care model.

2. Monograph: The Quality Management (QM) Plan: A Practical, Patient-Centered Template by Dale S. Benson, MD, FACPE and Peyton G. Townes, Jr., MHSA (June 2011)

The aim of this NACHC Monograph is to provide a basic blueprint for the QM Plan of a typical mid-sized health center, which can then easily be modified as needed to accommodate both small and larger, more complex organizations.  The QM Plan helps health centers seamlessly integrate new programs, models, and technologies with the primary care services they have long provided.  A clear QM Plan that underlies a comprehensive QM program can be a real boon, both in managing new mandates and in ensuring that health centers are truly effective agents for improving individual and community health.  This Monograph models a comprehensive approach to QM that can accommodate a wide range of initiatives, including new programs relating to specialty care and/or broader community-oriented services.

Note: If you need a Word version of the Monograph to cut-and-paste specific sections for your own QM Plan, please e-mail Katja Laepke.

3. Peer Networking Learning Community

If you wish to contact fellow quality colleagues and/or any of our content experts to ask questions, address specific issues, and/or share best practices, please e-mail Cheryl Modica.  In addition, an online Discussion Board will soon be available in the My NACHC Learning Center.
